Boards, Individual Members recognized during Annual Conference
:: The Board of Trustees of the Kemper County and the Western Line school districts (pictured with MSBA President Julie Jordan) took top honors in the MSBA Center for Board Development's Board Honors Program recognition on Wednesday, February 27. Each board earned Mortar Board distinction, signifying that every member of each board earned a minimum of 24 hours of board development training during the 2006-07 school year. Awards in the honors program were presented during the Celebration Luncheon held as a part of MSBA's 36th Annual Conference at the Hilton Hotel in Jackson. In addition to the awards presented to Kemper County and Western Line school districts, awards applauded other boards and individual board members for their efforts in refining their school governance skills beyond state mandated requirements. 12 districts honored in MSBA Lighthouse School Leader Awards Program :: The MSBA Lighthouse School Leader Awards program, in partnership with Watkins & Young, LLC and The Excellence Group, recognizes districts for their success in meeting more rigorous state and federal accountability standards. Presentations were made Tuesday, November 13 during MSBA's Fall Leadership Conference at a special luncheon where district and individual awards were given. Jordan, Fountain elected MSBA Pres, VP
:: In a unanimous vote Tuesday, November 13, during the MSBA Delegates Assembly, school board members across the state elected Columbus school board member and business owner Julie Jordan as president of the Mississippi School Boards Association. Jackson County board president and corporate electrical distribution group team member Kenneth Foundation was elected vice president, while North Panola board president Lygunnah Bean was elected new MSBA secretary-treasurer. 4 MS Schools named national Blue Ribbon Schools :: Biloxi, Gulfport, Long Beach and Petal school districts have schools that have been honored for their efforts in closing the achievement gap among students. The schools, named October 2 in a press release by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, were among 287 recognized during a November 12-13 White House ceremony in Washington.
MDE offers free online course for educators :: The e-Learning for Educators Initiative, a collaboration between the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) and Mississippi Public Broadcasting, provides Mississippi educators quality professional development opportunities designed to address content knowledge and the skills for improving student performance. Supreme Court Decisions impact schools nationwide :: In three high profile lawsuits against schools, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of school districts and school boards in two cases and in a separate case struck down a lower court's ruling favoring the use of race as a factor in student assignments and programs. New survey points to concerns about rising college costs :: A record number of Americans now say a college education is necessary for success in the workplace and the vast majority say costs should not prevent qualified students from attending. But more than half say college prices are rising faster than other expenses and 62 percent say many qualified students do not have the opportunity for a college education. Minority parents are significantly more concerned about college access. The report finds Americans are generally positive toward higher education, but there is evidence that this satisfaction is beginning to erode. Read more...
First time Mississippi students have to meet new immunization requirements this fall :: The Mississippi Bureau of Immunization has new immunization requirements for first time students. Effective August 1, 2007, two doses of the Varicella vaccine are required for students entering kindergarten and for those attending Mississippi schools for the first time. The new requirements are in addition to immunization standards already in place. The new immunization school requirements chart is posted on the Mississippi Department of Health (MDH) Web site. Also, please remember that the Immunization 121 Compliance Form is required by state law to be on file at the home school for all students. Questions should be directed to MDH at 601-576-7751.
