CLINTON, MS –– Columbia School District Board Member Charles Boston has received the Mississippi School Boards Association’s coveted School Board Member of the Year Award for 2013, in recognition of his distinguished leadership as a school board member. The award honors a current school board member who demonstrates outstanding leadership by effective efforts in

  • Advocating for children
  • Increasing student achievement
  • Understanding school board governance, and,
  • Involving the community in children’s education

Boston, high school football coach of the late professional football player Walter Payton, was selected by the MSBA Board Member of the Year Selection Committee, comprised of current and/or past school board presidents from each of Mississippi’s Congressional Districts. Community and colleague letters of support indicated that Boston has been a strong advocate for children for decades, encouraging students to let nothing stop them from realizing their dreams. He has been a member of the Columbia School District Board of Trustees since January 1996.

"Coach Boston's contributions have not been made by holding regional, state or national offices, but in the quiet unassuming way he has helped students. He simply has an unconditional love for children and wants to see them prosper," said Columbia School District Superintendent Marietta James in recommending Boston for recognition. She noted that Boston attends board meetings with students in mind: "How will items on the agenda benefit students, and will all people, students, parents and employees be treated fairly."

A former longtime Columbia board member voiced similar sentiments. "He knew he was appointed to set policy and not to micromange the district," said former board member colleague Gus Markins, who served on the Columbia board from 1998 to 2008. "He allowed administrators to do their job while holding them accountable for academic excellence and caring for children. His heart is with all children, but particularly with the children of the Columbia School District."

As recipient of the BMOY Award, Boston was presented a crystal trophy, and his name is engraved on a perpetual plaque displayed at the offices of MSBA. Additionally, he was awarded a two-night stay and a dining gift certificate, compliments of the Hilton Hotel.
